Position

The Ubuntu Engineering Server Team at Canonical is seeking open source enthusiasts to contribute to building the future of Ubuntu. The role involves maintaining and packaging a wide variety of software, including web servers, databases, and virtualization/containerization stacks.

As a Software Engineer, your responsibilities will include:

  • Collaborating proactively within a distributed team
  • Fostering a seamless user experience for all Ubuntu users through software ecosystem development
  • Evaluating contributions from other engineers to uphold high software quality standards
  • Shaping the future of Ubuntu with new ideas and project advice
  • Collaborating with Ubuntu and Debian communities, upstream projects, and commercial customers
  • Debugging issues related to open source and team-maintained code
  • Working on maintaining Ubuntu Server packages focused on traditional workloads, virtualization, containers, and package management

Qualifications:

  • A passion for technology and collaboration with talented individuals
  • Curiosity, flexibility, articulate communication, and accountability
  • Interest or experience in open source maintenance or contribution
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, STEM, or a related field
  • Understanding of reproducibility and testing, with comfort in setting up test systems in containers or virtual machines
  • Strong fundamentals in at least one programming language such as C/C++, Python, Rust, or Go
  • Interest in learning about distro packaging and fundamental understanding of package management
  • Familiarity with containerization and virtualization technologies (e.g., Docker, LXD, Virtualbox)
