Position

Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems, known for its widely used platform, Ubuntu. We invite open source enthusiasts to join our Ubuntu Engineering Server Team, where we maintain and package a wide array of software including web servers, databases, virtualization, and containerization stacks.

As a Software Engineer with us, you will have the opportunity to contribute to the evolution of Ubuntu, working collaboratively within a distributed team. Your work will help create a seamless user experience for all Ubuntu users and maintain high-quality software standards.

Location: Dubai, Dubai, United Arab Emirates (Remote)

Work Conditions: Remote, Full-time with global travel (2 to 4 weeks annually for internal and external events)

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate proactively within a distributed team.
  • Foster a software ecosystem with a seamless user experience.
  • Evaluate contributions of other engineers to ensure quality.
  • Shape the future of Ubuntu through innovative ideas.
  • Collaborate with Ubuntu and Debian communities, upstream projects, and customers.
  • Debug open source code and maintain Ubuntu Server packages, particularly focusing on traditional server workloads, virtualization, and package management.

Requirements:

  • A love for technology and working with talented individuals.
  • A Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, STEM, or a similar field.
  • Strong fundamentals in at least one programming language (C/C++, Python, Rust, or Go).
  • Interest or experience in open source maintenance or contributions.
  • Familiarity with package management, dependency resolution, and containerization technologies such as Docker, LXD, or Virtualbox.
  • Basic understanding of reproducibility and testing procedures.
