The Ubuntu Engineering Server Team at Canonical is looking for software engineers who are passionate about open-source software. The role involves maintaining and packaging a variety of software, including web servers, databases, and virtualization and containerization stacks. Location: Riyadh, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (Remote) Work Conditions: - Remote, full-time position - Requires global travel 2 to 4 weeks for internal and external events - Distributed work environment with twice-yearly team sprints in person Key Responsibilities: - Collaborate within a distributed team - Foster a seamless user experience for all Ubuntu users - Evaluate contributions from other engineers to uphold high software quality standards - Shape the future of Ubuntu with innovative ideas and by advising on ongoing works - Work with diverse teams in the Ubuntu and Debian communities, plus upstream projects and customers - Debug open-source and team-maintained code - Maintain Ubuntu Server packages, specifically in traditional server workloads, virtualization, containers, and package management What We Are Looking For: - A passion for technology and collaboration - Curiosity, flexibility, and strong communication skills - Interest or experience in open-source maintenance or contribution - Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Computer Science, STEM, or a related field - Familiarity with reproducibility and testing - Proficiency in at least one programming language (e.g., C/C++, Python, Rust, Go) - Interest in learning about distro packaging and understanding package management - Knowledge of containerization (e.g., Docker, OCI, LXD) and virtualization (e.g., VirtualBox, QEMU, Public Clouds) Compensation and Benefits: Canonical considers various factors for compensation, including geographical location and experience.
