About the Job:
Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems to the global enterprise and technology markets. Our platform, Ubuntu, is widely used in breakthrough enterprise initiatives such as public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. Canonical is building a new generation of Ubuntu-based container images to simplify open-source application deployment worldwide. These images will be free to use with long-term security commitments, and engineered for performance, security, and usability.
In this role, you will be responsible for building and maintaining a portfolio of container images while collaborating with multiple teams to ensure high quality and a seamless user experience. You will participate in the implementation and maintenance of Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery automation, demonstrating insights into container-based DevOps. This position allows you to contribute to fast-moving products and gain experience with various container technologies and open source projects.
Key Responsibilities:
- Build robust, scalable, leading-edge container images
- Work on automated CI/CD processes for building, testing, and publishing container images
- Write tools and tests for security compliance and cloud-native compatibility
- Participate in engineering processes through code and architectural review
- Contribute as both a user and developer to improve our Python- and Go-based container-building tools
- Provide technical feedback for decision-making processes
- Engage with the open-source community as a subject-matter expert
- Document processes and grow the knowledge base
- Work in a collaborative, agile, and globally distributed environment
- Mentor junior team members and assist in hiring
What We Are Looking For:
- Knowledgeable and passionate about software development
- Experience in collaborative development
- Familiarity with CI/CD systems (e.g., Jenkins, GitHub Actions, Concourse CI)
- Understanding of GitOps principles and workflows
- Proven track record of delivering high-quality software
- Experience in building container images
- Proficiency in at least one container management/orchestration tool (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes)
- Experience with Python and Linux systems administration
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Bachelor's or equivalent in Computer Science, STEM, or a similar degree
