Position

Canonical is a leading provider of open-source software and operating systems, particularly known for Ubuntu, which is utilized in various enterprise initiatives such as public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. We are looking for an Engineering Manager for Sustaining Engineering who is passionate about open-source software, Linux, and cloud computing.

As an Engineering Manager, you will lead a vital team that continuously improves open-source software by resolving defects reported by customers. This position involves managing one of our regional teams and collaborating with experts across time zones. You will ensure a good work-life balance for your team and facilitate their professional growth, while also driving technical delivery and strategy.

Work Conditions:

  • This is a globally remote role.
  • Occasional global travel up to 10% for internal and external events.
  • Full-time position.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and lead a distributed team of engineers.
  • Hire, coach, mentor, and provide feedback and career development guidance.
  • Manage key performance indicators (KPIs) and training.
  • Deliver timely bug fixes, patches, and technical solutions across various technologies, including Ubuntu, OpenStack, Ceph, Kubernetes, Juju, and MAAS.
  • Advocate for modern software development practices and grow a collaborative engineering culture.

Qualifications:

  • Professional software delivery experience using C, C++, Go, Python, or similar languages.
  • Knowledge and passion for software development.
  • Leadership experience with a focus on complex problem resolution.
  • Familiarity with version control systems like git and debugging tools such as gdb.
  • Strong commitment to testing methodologies and maintainable code quality.
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both verbal and written.
  • Experience with Linux, particularly Ubuntu, and knowledge of Open Source Business Models.
  • People management experience in a support organization is a plus.
