Position

Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems to global enterprise and technology markets. Our platform, Ubuntu, is widely used in public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. We are hiring an Engineering Manager for Sustaining Engineering who is passionate about open source software, Linux, and cloud computing. This team continuously improves various open source software by resolving defects reported by customers.

As an engineering manager, your primary responsibility is to support your team members in their growth as engineers, ensuring they contribute value and have a fulfilling experience at Canonical. You will lead a regional team, report directly to the global Director of Sustaining Engineering, and influence the company's culture, strategy, and technical delivery.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and lead a distributed team of engineers.
  • Hire, coach, mentor, and provide career development guidance.
  • Manage and measure key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Support timely delivery of bug fixes and technical solutions across various technology fields, including Ubuntu, OpenStack, Ceph, Kubernetes, Juju, and MAAS.
  • Advocate modern software development practices and foster a collaborative engineering culture.
  • Collaborate with other teams within the organization.

Work Conditions:

  • This is a full-time, remote role.
  • Global travel up to 10% for internal and external events.

Language Requirement:

  • Excellent communication skills in English, both verbal and written.

Qualifications:

  • Professional software delivery experience using C, C++, Go, Python, or similar.
  • Passion for software development and experience with version control systems.
  • Familiarity with debugging tools and a strong commitment to testing methodologies.
  • Experience with Linux, preferably Ubuntu, and knowledge of Open Source business models.
  • People management experience in a support organization is a strong plus.
