Position

Canonical, the publisher of Ubuntu, is significantly expanding its Linux kernel engineering capacity. This role involves leading a distributed team of engineers, focusing on upstream development, optimizing the Ubuntu kernel for new hardware, handling security updates, and collaborating with partners to ensure compatibility across various devices.

As an engineering manager, your main responsibility is to your team—helping them grow as engineers and ensuring they enjoy their work. The ideal candidate will either be an experienced manager of high-performing software teams or a proficient technical lead taking on management responsibilities. A passion for Linux and a commitment to delivering quality work to millions of users is essential.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and develop a distributed engineering team.
  • Support the timely delivery of core and specialized Ubuntu kernels.
  • Oversee custom kernel engineering engagements.
  • Maintain high standards of quality and reliability.
  • Engage with teams at Canonical, the open source community, and commercial partners.
  • Travel globally 2-3 times a year for engineering events.

What We Are Looking For:

  • Significant programming experience in C; knowledge of Python, Golang, or similar languages is highly regarded.
  • Substantial experience with Linux kernel internals and development principles.
  • Demonstrated experience managing or leading software engineering teams.
  • Previous contribution to an open source project.
  • Understanding of agile software development methodologies.
  • Effective communication skills in English (both written and oral).
