Position

Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems, known for its platform, Ubuntu. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work within a dynamic engineering environment focused on Linux-based infrastructure and applications, covering all layers of the stack, including bare metal, virtualization (KVM), containerization (Docker/LXC/LXD), storage (Ceph and Linux filesystems), and networking (OVS, OVN, Core networking), along with OpenStack and Kubernetes.

As a Software Maintenance Engineer, you will tackle critical issues in the open source stack that require upstream bug fixes, demonstrating your engineering skills across the stack, including the kernel, and working with a variety of languages. Key responsibilities include:

  • Resolving complex customer problems related to Ubuntu, Kernel, Ceph, OpenStack, Kubernetes, and other open source software.
  • Maintaining close working relationships with Canonical's Field, Support, and product engineering teams.
  • Participating in upstream communities and developing bug fixes, backporting patches, and collaborating for inclusion.
  • Reviewing code produced by other engineers and engaging in team discussions to enhance processes and documentation.
  • Maintaining clear and effective communication while being productive in managing priorities.

Location: Jiddah, Makkah, Saudi Arabia (Remote)

Requirements:

  • Exceptional academic track record.
  • Background in Computer Science, STEM, or similar fields.
  • Experience with Linux and open source software.
  • Proficiency in at least one of the following programming languages: Python, Go, C, or C++ on Linux.
  • A commitment to learning and resolving challenging technological issues.

Nice-to-Have Skills:

  • Interest or willingness to learn about Ubuntu Linux (kernel or userspace), Kubernetes, OpenStack, Ceph, QEMU/KVM, LXC/LXD, PostgreSQL, Mongo, Debian packaging, and distributed systems.

Travel Requirements:

  • Willingness to travel up to 10% of work time for international team meetings, events, and conferences, approximately 4 times per year.
