Position

Canonical is a leading provider of open-source software and operating systems to the global enterprise and technology markets. Our platform, Ubuntu, is widely used in breakthrough enterprise initiatives such as public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. We collaborate with industry leaders and silicon vendors to optimize Ubuntu for the latest x86, ARM, RISC-V, s390x, and POWER systems.

We are seeking an Engineering Manager passionate about operational systems, open-source technologies, and cutting-edge hardware. This role will involve leading engineering teams to enable and optimize Ubuntu, driving healthy engineering practices, and ensuring quality and performance optimizations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and develop a team of engineers, ranging from graduate to senior level.
  • Oversee commercial engagements and support timely delivery on agreed project milestones.
  • Participate as technical lead on complex customer engagements involving complete system architectures.
  • Implement disciplined engineering processes and integrate platform-oriented software stacks.
  • Contribute to code reviews and technical documentation.
  • Collaborate with the leadership team to facilitate technical delivery and define strategy.

What We Are Looking For:

  • Exceptional academic record with an undergraduate degree in Computer Science, STEM, or equivalent experience.
  • Fluency in C, C++, and Python.
  • Experience with Linux and operational systems software (e.g., kernel or user space).
  • Experience with Debian/Ubuntu or other distribution packaging.
  • Professional written and spoken English.
  • Ability to travel internationally twice a year for company events, up to two weeks long.

Nice-to-Have Skills:

  • Experience working with open-source communities and licenses.
  • Knowledge of computer architecture (x86, ARM, RISC-V, or s390x).
  • Familiarity with build systems and toolchains, including cross-compilation.
  • Experience with Docker/OCI containers, Kubernetes, and performance engineering.
