Position

Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems, particularly known for our platform, Ubuntu, which is widely utilized in enterprise initiatives such as public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. We collaborate with prominent public cloud and silicon providers as well as industry leaders across multiple sectors.

We are seeking engineering managers who are passionate about operational systems, open source technologies, and cutting-edge hardware. You will lead engineering teams to enable and optimize Ubuntu for the latest architectures including x86, ARM, RISC-V, s390x, and POWER systems, while integrating next-generation features and performance enhancements.

As a Software Platform Engineering Manager, you will:

  • Lead and develop a team of engineers, ranging from graduate to senior level.
  • Oversee commercial engagements and ensure timely delivery on project milestones.
  • Act as a technical lead on complex customer engagements and implement disciplined engineering processes.
  • Optimize Ubuntu for the latest hardware platforms and contribute to code reviews and technical documentation.
  • Be a part of the leadership team and facilitate technical delivery while collaborating with other leaders.

What We Are Looking For:

  • Exceptional academic record in Computer Science or STEM, or an impactful narrative of an alternative path.
  • Fluency in C, C++, and Python.
  • Experience with Linux, operational systems software, and Debian/Ubuntu packaging.
  • Proven experience leading software engineering teams.
  • Professional written and spoken English is essential.
  • Ability to travel internationally twice a year for company events (up to two weeks long).

Nice-to-Have Skills:

  • Experience working in open source communities and knowledge of computer architecture (x86, ARM, RISC-V, s390x).
  • Familiarity with build systems, toolchains, and various technologies including Docker, OCI containers, and K8s.
  • Experience with Linux virtualization, networking, or graphics stacks.
