Position

Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems to the global enterprise and technology markets. Our platform, Ubuntu, is used in various enterprise initiatives including public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. We partner with renowned silicon vendors to optimize Ubuntu on their latest platforms, implementing next-generation features and performance enhancements while ensuring a unified operating experience.

We are seeking Engineering Managers who are passionate about operational systems and open-source technologies to lead teams in enabling and optimizing Ubuntu for the latest x86, ARM, RISC-V, s390x, and POWER systems. As an Engineering Manager, you will foster healthy engineering practices, oversee documentation, and ensure quality and performance optimizations while delivering high-quality design and code. You will also be responsible for line management and career guidance for your team.

Work Conditions:

  • Full-time, remote role with open positions available in every time zone.
  • Occasional international travel, approximately twice a year for company events lasting up to two weeks.

Language Requirements:

  • Professional written and spoken English is required.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and develop a team of engineers, from graduate to senior level.
  • Oversee commercial engagements and ensure timely project delivery.
  • Act as the technical lead on complex customer engagements.
  • Implement disciplined engineering processes and maintain software stacks.
  • Optimize Ubuntu for the latest hardware platforms and contribute to code reviews and technical documentation.

Qualifications:

  • Exceptional academic track record; undergraduate degree in Computer Science or related STEM field preferred.
  • Fluency in C, C++, and Python.
  • Experience with Linux and operational systems software, particularly with Debian/Ubuntu.
  • Experience in leading software engineering teams.
  • Confidence to engage in constructive feedback and discussions.

Nice-to-Have Skills:

  • Experience working with open-source communities and familiarity with licenses.
  • Knowledge of computer architecture such as x86, ARM, RISC-V, or s390x.
  • Familiarity with build systems and toolchains, including cross-compilation.
  • Experience in performance engineering and working with customers.
