Position

We are hiring a Software Support Engineer to work in a dynamic engineering role focused on Linux-based infrastructure and applications. This position involves working across all layers of the software stack, including bare metal, virtualization (KVM), containerization (Docker/LXC/LXD), storage (Ceph and Linux filesystems), networking (OVS, OVN and Core networking), OpenStack, Kubernetes, and the open source applications that run on Ubuntu.

In this role, you will leverage your engineering expertise to address complex issues and contribute to the success of customers and the Ubuntu community. You will tackle critical problems in the open-source stack that require upstream bug fixes and demonstrate your ability to work across different languages and levels of the software stack.

Work Conditions: Full-time, Remote, with the possibility to travel internationally up to 10% of work time for team meetings, events, and conferences.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Resolve complex customer problems related to Ubuntu, Kernel, Ceph, OpenStack, Kubernetes, and other open-source software.
  • Maintain a close working relationship with Canonical's Field, Support, and product engineering teams.
  • Participate in upstream communities.
  • Develop bug fixes, backport patches, and work with upstream for inclusion.
  • Review code produced by other engineers.
  • Prioritize work and manage your time effectively.
  • Participate in team discussions to improve processes, tools, and documentation.
  • Maintain clear, technical, and concise communications.

What We Are Looking For:

  • An exceptional academic track record.
  • Background in Computer Science, STEM, or related fields.
  • Experience with Linux and open source software.
  • Proficiency in at least one of Python, Go, C, or C++ on Linux.
  • A drive to learn new technologies and tackle challenging issues.
  • Willingness to travel up to four times a year for internal events.

  • A passion for technology and collaboration with intelligent colleagues.
  • Curiosity, flexibility, and accountability.
  • Interest or willingness to learn about Ubuntu Linux, Kubernetes, OpenStack, Ceph, QEMU/KVM, LXC/LXD, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Debian packaging, or distributed systems.
