Position

Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems, renowned for its platform, Ubuntu. As a Software Support Engineer, you will engage in a dynamic engineering role focusing on Linux-based infrastructure and applications across various layers of the stack, including bare metal, virtualization (KVM), containerization (Docker/LXC/LXD), storage (Ceph), networking (OVS, OVN), OpenStack, Kubernetes, and the open source applications utilized by large enterprise customers.

This role requires a passion for Linux and open source, coupled with great communication skills and a desire to troubleshoot and resolve complex issues that impact millions of users worldwide. You will be instrumental in producing bug fixes and enhancements that contribute to the success of our customers, partners, and Ubuntu itself.

Responsibilities:

  • Resolve complex customer issues related to Ubuntu, Kernel, Ceph, OpenStack, Kubernetes, and other open source software.
  • Maintain a close working relationship with Canonical's field, support, and product engineering teams.
  • Engage with upstream communities and contribute to the development of bug fixes and patches.
  • Review code and participate in discussions to improve processes, tools, and documentation.
  • Manage workload effectively and ensure clear, technical communication.

What We Are Looking For:

  • An exceptional academic track record with a background in Computer Science, STEM, or a related field.
  • Experience with Linux and open source software.
  • Proficiency in at least one of the following programming languages: Python, Go, C, or C++ on Linux.
  • A proactive and inquisitive mindset, ready to tackle unfamiliar technology and complex issues.

Nice-to-Have Skills:

  • Strong interest in learning about technologies such as Ubuntu Linux (kernel or userspace), Kubernetes, OpenStack, Ceph, QEMU/KVM, LXC/LXD, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, and distributed systems.
  • Excellent soft skills including curiosity, flexibility, accountability, and the ability to work collaboratively with others.
