Position

This position is part of a general track for Staff Engineer or above in any team at Canonical. After the initial interviews, we will identify suitable teams for your skills. Canonical is dedicated to delivering open source solutions across all computing platforms, with Ubuntu being the preferred Linux system for cloud, desktop, and IoT applications.

Our engineering teams develop operating systems, programming languages, applications, and infrastructure, utilizing technologies such as Golang, Python, C, C++, and Rust for system services, along with React and Flutter for the front end.

As a Staff Engineer, you are expected to excel in software architecture, coding, and possess the leadership skills necessary to collaborate across teams and products, ensuring outstanding technology creation and community engagement. You will partner with an Engineering Director to take responsibility for product outcomes and strive for excellence in open-source software and innovation.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Leading the architecture and design of impactful open source projects.
  • Coding in languages such as Golang, Rust, Python, C/C++, or TypeScript/React.
  • Collaborating with a globally distributed team.
  • Mentoring colleagues and aiding in their professional growth.
  • Contributing to technical documentation.
  • Working from home with opportunities for global travel twice annually.

Work Conditions:

  • Full-time remote position.
  • Ability to travel twice a year for company events lasting up to two weeks.
  • Flexibility to work across all time zones.

Language Requirements:

  • Professional written and spoken English is required.

Qualifications:

  • Exceptional academic record in Computer Science or a STEM field, or an equivalent alternative path.
  • Drive and a proven history of exceeding expectations.
  • Technical leadership and team motivation skills.
  • Self-starting and well-organized with the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Extensive experience with at least one of Go, Rust, Python, or C.
  • Familiarity with Linux (Debian or Ubuntu preferred).
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.

Additional Skills (not mandatory, but beneficial):

  • Experience with container technologies (LXD, Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Knowledge of distributed systems, performance engineering, software security, and build systems/toolchains.
  • Experience with public clouds or OpenStack, Debian/Ubuntu packaging, web services, and REST/gRPC APIs.
