Position

About the Role
This internship, lasting 5 to 6 months and based in Monaco, focuses on Vortex-Induced Vibrations (VIV) on mooring lines. The objective is to develop a practical approach for assessing VIV on mooring lines that is technically justified and can be implemented consistently and efficiently in engineering projects. The main types of mooring systems include Single Point Mooring and Spread Mooring, both of which experience environmental loading from waves, wind, and current throughout their operational life. VIV occurs when currents act on long, slender mooring components and can lead to significant oscillations that impact mooring dynamics, stress ranges, and contribute to fatigue damage.

Responsibilities
The internship covers the following activities:

  • Review and summarize the requirements and recommended practices from ABS, BV, and DNV regarding VIV on mooring lines.
  • Develop a physical understanding of VIV phenomena including vortex shedding, lock-in of mooring line response, damping, and mode participation, while establishing dimensionless parameters and screening indicators for mooring components.
  • Assess VIV on at least one representative spread-moored project by:
    • Comparing modeling and methodology options, and investigating key parameters such as current intensity and direction, mooring line pretension, and diameter.
    • Post-processing response quantities, deriving stress or tension ranges as appropriate, performing cycle counting, and evaluating the incremental fatigue contribution associated with VIV.
    • Documenting modeling assumptions, limitations, and quality checks.
  • If time permits, assess VIV on a turret-moored project.
  • Develop a decision framework for selecting an appropriate VIV assessment methodology for efficient implementation on projects.

Your Role

  • Gain hands-on exposure to hydrodynamic and mooring system design methods used in offshore projects.
  • Develop a solid understanding of VIV physics and mooring-system behavior.
  • Perform numerical analyses to identify best modeling techniques and interpret results.
  • Present conclusions and recommendations to the Hydrodynamics department.

What it Will Bring to You

  • Exposure to engineering methods used in mooring design.
  • Use of industry-recognized software such as OrcaFlex and Shear 7.
  • A robust theoretical and practical background in mooring across various applications (offshore, renewables, etc.).

Education

  • Candidates should be in their second or third year of engineering studies.
  • Prior exposure to offshore engineering or mooring systems is advantageous.
  • Programming skills in Python are required.
