As a Junior Linux Kernel Engineer, you will work on the Linux kernel for Ubuntu, participating in initiatives such as optimizing solutions for key Silicon and Cloud platforms, enabling Ubuntu on a variety of embedded systems, and integrating third-party drivers. We are seeking recent university graduates or early career professionals who are eager to develop kernel-level software.
Work Conditions:
- Full-time position.
- Home-based work environment with teams distributed globally.
- Responsibility to travel twice a year for company engineering events (up to two weeks).
Key Responsibilities:
- Collaborate regularly with a globally distributed team.
- Learn from senior mentors about the Linux kernel and its distribution.
- Diagnose and resolve kernel issues reported by customers and the community.
- Take personal responsibility for delivering various flavors of the Ubuntu Linux kernel.
- Improve tooling and automation for the delivery and testing of Ubuntu Linux kernels.
- Submit, review, and apply kernel patches.
Requirements:
- Fluency in English, both written and verbal.
- Programming experience in C and possibly Rust.
- Familiarity with version control practices, ideally with git.
- Understanding of operating system kernel fundamentals.
- Motivated self-starter comfortable in a remote work environment.
- Willingness to travel for company events.
Nice-to-Have Skills:
- Interest and experience in Rust.
- Programming in Python and Bash.
- Prior experience with Ubuntu/Debian/Snap packaging.
- Experience with kernel patching and debugging.
- Strong understanding of device drivers and low-level system engineering.
