As a Junior Linux Kernel Engineer, you will work on the Linux kernel for Ubuntu, participating in initiatives such as optimizing solutions for key Silicon and Cloud platforms, enabling Ubuntu on a variety of embedded systems, and integrating third-party drivers. We are seeking recent university graduates or early career professionals who are eager to develop kernel-level software.

Work Conditions:

  • Full-time position.
  • Home-based work environment with teams distributed globally.
  • Responsibility to travel twice a year for company engineering events (up to two weeks).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate regularly with a globally distributed team.
  • Learn from senior mentors about the Linux kernel and its distribution.
  • Diagnose and resolve kernel issues reported by customers and the community.
  • Take personal responsibility for delivering various flavors of the Ubuntu Linux kernel.
  • Improve tooling and automation for the delivery and testing of Ubuntu Linux kernels.
  • Submit, review, and apply kernel patches.

Requirements:

  • Fluency in English, both written and verbal.
  • Programming experience in C and possibly Rust.
  • Familiarity with version control practices, ideally with git.
  • Understanding of operating system kernel fundamentals.
  • Motivated self-starter comfortable in a remote work environment.
  • Willingness to travel for company events.

Nice-to-Have Skills:

  • Interest and experience in Rust.
  • Programming in Python and Bash.
  • Prior experience with Ubuntu/Debian/Snap packaging.
  • Experience with kernel patching and debugging.
  • Strong understanding of device drivers and low-level system engineering.
