About the Job:
Canonical is a leading provider of open-source software and operating systems for global enterprise and technology markets. We are hiring a Data Governance Engineer focusing on data governance policies, processes, standards, and monitoring in compliance with internal policies and applicable regulatory frameworks, such as GDPR, DPA, and ISO.

The successful candidate will develop and maintain an internal data catalog with automated data labeling and quality metrics, perform access management, and ensure adherence to data security best practices. The Data Governance team within the Commercial Systems unit is dedicated to enabling secure and well-governed access to comprehensive data sets originating from numerous internal and external sources in a data mesh framework.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Define, monitor, and execute data governance policies.
  • Design, implement, and maintain data labeling and quality metrics in the data catalog.
  • Deploy and operate services developed by the team.
  • Depending on your seniority, coach and mentor colleagues, offering career development feedback.
  • Develop and promote great engineering and organizational practices.

Requirements:

  • Exceptional academic record from both high school and university with a technical undergraduate degree, or a compelling alternative path.
  • Experience with data quality, governance, and security processes and tools.
  • Proficient in software development using Python and SQL.
  • Professional written and spoken English with excellent presentation skills.
  • Result-oriented with a personal drive to meet commitments.
  • Willingness to travel internationally twice a year for company events lasting up to two weeks.

Nice-to-Have Skills:

  • Performance engineering and security experience.
  • Experience with tools such as Airbyte, Ranger, Superset, Temporal, or Trino.

Language Requirements:
Professional proficiency in written and spoken English.
