About the Job: Canonical is a leading provider of open-source software and operating systems to the global enterprise and technology markets. Our platform, Ubuntu, is extensively utilized in major enterprise initiatives such as public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. We serve a diverse customer base, including leading public cloud and silicon providers. As a pioneer of global distributed collaboration, we operate with over 1200 colleagues in more than 75 countries, with very few office-based roles. Teams meet in person two to four times a year in various global locations to align on strategy and execution.

In this role, you will manage the team responsible for delivering the Ubuntu Server Distribution globally. Ubuntu aims to provide the latest, most reliable free software components, building upon the technical excellence of Debian while adapting to the needs of large, innovative customers. This position is for a leader who is passionate about strong teams, open-source software, and Ubuntu.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Build and lead a globally distributed team of engineers.
  • Develop talent through coaching, mentoring, feedback, and hands-on career development.
  • Collaborate with Product Management to define the vision and strategy for Ubuntu and your team.
  • Manage expectations with other engineering teams, senior management, and external stakeholders.
  • Advocate for and advance modern, agile software development practices.
  • Foster a healthy, collaborative engineering culture aligned with company values.
  • Actively engage in leadership collaboration within the organization.
  • Oversee the quality of the Ubuntu Server image family and deliver Ubuntu Server features.
  • Work remotely with occasional global travel for up to 6 weeks per year.

Who You Are:

  • Passionate about developing and growing people with a proven track record.
  • Knowledgeable and enthusiastic about software development.
  • Possess 3+ years of experience in leading, managing, coaching, and mentoring software developers (experience with distributed teams is a plus).
  • Focused on success with a commitment to delivering high-quality software on time.
  • Experienced in an agile development environment.
  • Hold a Bachelor's or equivalent degree in Computer Science, STEM, or a related field.
  • Strong written and verbal technical communication skills in English.
  • Familiarity with a modern GNU/Linux distribution, preferably Debian or Ubuntu.
  • Practical experience with at least one of the following: Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, or Amazon Web Services.

Work Conditions:

  • Remote work environment with opportunities for global travel.
  • Travel for team events and meetings twice a year.

Language Requirements:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English are required.
