Position

Canonical is a leading provider of open-source software and operating systems, known for its platform, Ubuntu. We support significant enterprise initiatives in areas such as public cloud, data science, AI, and IoT, serving many of the world’s top public cloud and silicon providers. Our team consists of over 1,100 colleagues across 75+ countries, promoting a culture of distributed collaboration with minimal office-based roles. Team meetings occur two to four times a year in diverse locations globally.

We are seeking an Engineering Manager for Web to collaborate with product managers and engineering teams to deliver scalable, reliable, and engaging user experiences for Canonical's products. Your primary responsibility will be supporting and developing your team of web engineers, ensuring their growth, valuable contributions, and overall positive experience at Canonical. This role entails providing technical leadership and influencing team culture, strategy, and execution.

Responsibilities:

  • Apply sound engineering principles to achieve team goals.
  • Estimate work, set goals, and meet targets.
  • Design and implement well-tested and documented software in web technologies or Flutter.
  • Debug and resolve user-reported issues.
  • Engage in code and architectural reviews.
  • Collaborate with the community on technical specifications.
  • Improve engineering practices and technical documentation.
  • Operate services developed by your team.

What We Are Looking For:

  • A strong passion for web and software development.
  • Excellent soft skills: thoughtful, self-motivated, and enterprising.
  • An exceptional academic record and preferably an undergraduate degree in Computer Science or in a STEM field.
  • Proven experience in high-quality web technology design and development.
  • Familiarity with Typescript, React, or Flutter.
  • An understanding of accessibility and performance in web development.
  • Experience with Linux (preferably Debian or Ubuntu).
  • Excellent communication, presentation skills, and interpersonal abilities.
  • A commitment to results with the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Willingness to travel twice a year for company events.

Nice-to-Have Skills:

  • Experience with container technologies such as LXD, Docker, and Kubernetes.
  • Knowledge of REST API design, development, and governance.
  • Background in performance engineering and security.
