Position

Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems, renowned for its platform, Ubuntu, which is widely used across various enterprise sectors including public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. We are on the lookout for an Information Systems Architect to set best practices in infrastructure as code at a global scale. This role will enhance the infrastructure behind millions of devices running Ubuntu.

The Information Systems (IS) team at Canonical manages all IT operations, including the globally distributed Ubuntu. As the IS Architect, you will design hardware and software implementations, improving the user experience for millions and guiding Canonical's engineers in a DevOps environment. Your leadership will focus on best practices for automation, reliability, operational scalability, security, and infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Define and implement a vision for a world-class internal cloud.
  • Maintain and update the technical design roadmap for the IS team, enhancing reliability and scalability.
  • Collaborate with cloud-ops software development teams to create standardized and automated operations.
  • Provide management with advice on technology, reliability, and resilience.
  • Lead the implementation of self-service products for scalable operations.
  • Work with product security to set best practices and mitigate threats.
  • Automate operations for complex distributed systems.
  • Analyze incidents to establish improvements and minimize recurrence.

Requirements:

  • Exceptional academic record with an undergraduate degree in a technical subject or equivalent experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of cloud computing, Linux networking, and incident response.
  • Strong communication skills in English (ability to communicate via email, chat, video calls, and in-person).
  • Passion for open source, especially Ubuntu or Debian.

Preferred Skills:

  • Modern software engineering practices (peer-review, unit testing, CI/CD).
  • Hands-on experience with enterprise Linux server administration at scale.

Work Conditions:

  • Remote position with travel to company events twice a year (approximately 4 weeks total).
  • Candidates must reside within the EMEA region.

Language Requirements:

  • Proficiency in English is essential.
