About the Job:

Ubuntu Linux, already the most popular Linux distribution in the world, is currently in an unprecedented surge of demand. The Canonical Kernel Team, responsible for the build, maintenance, and distribution of the Linux kernel for Ubuntu, is looking for individuals with a deep technical background in operating system kernels and distributions, as well as strong leadership skills.

The successful candidate will lead in the architecture, implementation, and ongoing delivery of various aspects of kernel engineering including driving engagements for key Silicon and Cloud partners, leading the mitigation of vulnerabilities, architecting enhancements for performance and reliability, streamlining the packaging of third-party components, and developing new methods to deliver Ubuntu Linux at scale while adhering to strict quality standards. While this is not a formal managerial role, the candidate will be expected to possess people skills to naturally lead engineers and coordinate with external teams.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Set the technical direction and lead the delivery of a team of junior and mid-career engineers.
  • Work closely with management to coordinate initiatives and delivery.
  • Collaborate daily with senior technical leadership on maintaining Ubuntu's position as a top Linux distribution.

Requirements:

  • Strong communication skills in English (both written and verbal).
  • Expert understanding of the C programming language.
  • Demonstrated expertise in a *nix-based operating system kernel and distribution (Linux experience preferred, but not mandatory).
  • Python and Bash scripting abilities.
  • Proficiency with the git version control system.
  • Ability to travel internationally at least twice a year for company events lasting up to two weeks.
  • Preferred Additional Skills:
    • Background in RTOS and real-time performance analysis.
    • Experience with Ubuntu/Debian/Snap packaging.
    • Familiarity with kernel patching, debugging, device drivers, and BSPs.
