Position

Engineering managers at Canonical are experienced coders who lead both architecture and code while setting expectations and holding their colleagues accountable. We are seeking a dedicated, technical engineering manager to lead the observability group, focusing on the development of distributed tracing or service mesh elements.

Our goal is to build an observability stack that is easy to deploy and operate on Kubernetes, as part of a broader initiative to deliver the best suite of open-source tools. This includes deep integration and automation for metrics, logging, telemetry, alerting, tracing, and profiling, aiming to make observability tools integral across software practices.

As an Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for managing an effective team, helping colleagues grow as engineers, and ensuring the team remains focused and productive. You are expected to facilitate technical delivery and contribute positively to the company's culture while collaborating closely with other managers, product managers, and architects to create an ambitious engineering roadmap.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage a distributed team of engineers and oversee its observability portfolio.
  • Organize and lead team processes to achieve objectives.
  • Conduct one-on-one meetings with team members and measure team health indicators.
  • Review code produced by engineers and represent Canonical at conferences.

Qualifications:

  • Exceptional academic record from high school and university.
  • Proven track record in software delivery, preferably in open source.
  • Willingness to travel up to 4 times a year for internal events.
  • Professional written and spoken English.
  • Experience with Linux (Debian or Ubuntu preferred), excellent interpersonal skills, and a passion for observability.

Additional Skills:

  • Experience as an engineering manager with a history of building high-performance teams.
  • Professional Python development experience, knowledge of Go, and open source contribution experience.
  • Understanding of observability and monitoring for software performance.

What We Offer:

  • Competitive compensation with annual reviews and performance-driven bonuses.
  • Distributed work environment with twice-yearly team sprints in person.
  • Personal learning and development budget of USD 2,000 per year.
  • Generous holiday leave and family leave policies.

Canonical is a pioneering tech firm at the forefront of open-source software development. Join us in fostering a diverse workplace and contributing to innovative projects that shape the future of technology.
