Position

Engineering managers at Canonical are always coders who can lead both architecture and code review. They play a crucial role in managing expectations and holding their colleagues accountable. Canonical is currently investing in the Grafana logging, monitoring, and observability stack to streamline deployment and operations on Kubernetes. This initiative aims to deliver a comprehensive suite of open source tools that provides deep integration and automation for metrics, logging, telemetry, alerting, tracing, and profiling.

The position involves leading the development of the Logging, Monitoring, and Alerting components within the observability group. Ideal candidates are passionate about open source software, Linux, Kubernetes, and observability. As an Engineering Manager, you will be expected to focus on running an effective team, mentoring colleagues, conducting code reviews, and fostering a positive team culture.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Managing a distributed team of engineers and overseeing its observability portfolio.
  • Organizing and leading the team's processes to help achieve objectives.
  • Conducting one-on-one meetings with team members and identifying health indicators.
  • Interacting with a vibrant community and reviewing code produced by other engineers.
  • Attending conferences to represent Canonical and its Observability Stack.

What We Are Looking For:

  • An exceptional academic record from high school and university.
  • A proven track record of professional software delivery experience, particularly in Python development (open source experience preferred).
  • A deep understanding of observability and monitoring practices.
  • Experience in designing and implementing observability solutions.
  • Fluency in professional written and spoken English.
  • Experience with Linux (preferably Debian or Ubuntu).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, curiosity, flexibility, and accountability.

Additional Skills That Might Be Beneficial:

  • Engineering management experience.
  • Working knowledge of Go.
  • Open source contribution experience.
  • Interest and experience with container technologies.
