Position

Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems, primarily known for its platform, Ubuntu. The company is dedicated to innovative projects across various sectors, including public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. They seek to hire Rust Engineering Leads of all experience levels to promote the adoption of Rust within Canonical’s offerings, starting with Ubuntu and extending to other projects and open source initiatives. As a Rust Engineering Lead, you will have the opportunity to contribute to rethinking Linux systems foundations using Rust, which is seen as a natural evolution for software traditionally written in C or C++. Canonical aims to establish Ubuntu as the optimal platform for Rust development.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement well-tested and documented software in Rust.
  • Advocate for Rust adoption in Canonical and upstream projects.
  • Identify projects for Rust adoption and resolve issues encountered by users.
  • Engage in engineering processes through code and architectural reviews.
  • Collaborate with community and colleagues on technical specifications.
  • Potentially deploy and operate services developed by the team.

Qualifications:

  • Exceptional academic track record, preferably in Computer Science or a related STEM field.
  • Experience with Linux is crucial; diverse Linux experience is preferred.
  • For senior positions, experience in building, deploying, and operating distributed systems and APIs.
  • Proficient in designing and writing high-quality Rust software on Linux.
  • Professional written and spoken English.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to thrive in a multicultural, multinational organization.

Language Requirements:

  • Professional written and spoken English.

Nice-to-Have Skills:

  • Experience in Ubuntu development.
  • Familiarity with technologies such as LXD, MicroK8s, SnapD, IoT, Juju, Ubuntu Core, and performance engineering.
