We are hiring Rust Engineering Leads at all levels of experience to drive the adoption of Rust across Canonical’s offerings. This role is pivotal in rethinking the foundations of future Linux systems, leveraging Rust to enhance system level services and capabilities. We aim to make Ubuntu the best platform for Rust development, ensuring accessibility to cutting-edge tools and capabilities for open source and enterprise development.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement well-tested and documented software in Rust.
  • Advocate for Rust adoption in Canonical and upstream projects.
  • Identify codebases for prioritization in Rust adoption.
  • Debug and address user issues encountered in software applications.
  • Participate in engineering processes through code and architectural reviews.
  • Collaborate on technical specifications with community and colleagues.
  • Contribute to the success of projects through technical advocacy.

Qualifications:

  • Exceptional academic record in Computer Science, STEM, or relevant experience in technology.
  • For senior roles, experience in building, deploying, and operating distributed systems and APIs.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Experience designing and writing high-quality Rust software on Linux.
  • Passion for Linux and system-level software.
  • Professional written and spoken English required.

Travel Requirements:

  • Ability to travel twice a year for company events (up to two weeks each).

Additional Skills (Nice-to-Have):

  • Experience developing for Ubuntu.
  • Familiarity with LXD, MicroK8s, SnapD, IoT, Juju.
  • Performance engineering and security expertise.
