We are seeking a Senior Engineering Manager to lead the team responsible for delivering the essential components of Ubuntu, including system startup, compilers, language runtimes, toolchains, networking, and storage configuration and management. This fast-paced, highly technical role operates at the core of Linux server systems.

In this pivotal position, you will lead and inspire a team of engineers to elevate Ubuntu. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading and growing a distributed team of engineers
  • Demonstrating sound engineering principles through active and hands-on leadership
  • Planning, estimating, and executing projects
  • Collaborating with product management to define the vision and strategy for Ubuntu
  • Engaging with cross-functional leadership teams
  • Promoting the adoption of the latest software development practices
  • Fostering a healthy and collaborative engineering culture aligned with company values
  • Ensuring alignment on product architecture and roadmaps across teams at Canonical

What We Are Looking For:

  • Extensive experience with Linux distributions and packaging technologies (e.g., deb, rpm, etc.)
  • Demonstrated experience managing or leading a software engineering team
  • High-quality software engineering knowledge in one or more areas: Linux system architecture, boot process, Java/GCC/Python/Rust/Go toolchains, ARM and/or RISC-V
  • Engagement with open source communities and processes
