Position

Canonical is a leading provider of open-source software and operating systems, primarily known for our platform, Ubuntu. We serve global enterprise and technology markets, facilitating critical initiatives in areas such as public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. As a pioneer of globally distributed collaboration, our team comprises over 1,100 colleagues across more than 75 countries, with limited office-based roles. Team members meet twice yearly in interesting locations worldwide to align on strategy and execution.

We are seeking a Senior Web Engineer to join our Web Engineering team. In this role, you will drive best practices across the team, identify risks, and communicate effectively with stakeholders. You will take ownership of large projects and contribute to technical documentation and engineering processes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Identify team priorities and drive initiatives for improvement.
  • Design, implement, test, and document software.
  • Debug and resolve user issues.
  • Conduct code and architectural reviews.
  • Ensure technical quality standards are met.
  • Mentor team members and retain a high standard of technical excellence.

Requirements:

  • Exceptional academic background with a degree in Computer Science or a related STEM field; or a compelling alternative path.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • Experience with Linux (Debian or Ubuntu preferred).
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal skills, and accountability.
  • Ability to travel twice a year for company events.

Nice-to-Have Skills:

  • Experience with container technologies (LXD, Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Knowledge of REST API design and governance.
  • Performance engineering and security experience.
