Position

Canonical is a leading provider of open-source software and operating systems to global enterprise and technology markets. Our platform, Ubuntu, is widely used in groundbreaking enterprise initiatives such as public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. We are looking for a Software Engineer - L3 Support to work in a dynamic engineering role in Linux-based infrastructure and applications, covering various layers of the stack, including bare metal, virtualization, containerization, storage, networking, OpenStack, and Kubernetes.

This role provides an opportunity for a technologist with an affinity for Linux and open source to build a career with Canonical and drive success for our customers, community, and the company. You will be responsible for resolving critical issues in the open-source stack that require upstream bug fixes and will work collaboratively with Canonical's Field, Support, and product engineering teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Resolve complex customer problems related to Ubuntu, Kernel, Ceph, OpenStack, Kubernetes, and other open-source software
  • Maintain a close working relationship with various teams within Canonical
  • Participate in upstream communities and develop bug fixes, backport patches, and work for inclusion
  • Review code produced by other engineers and maintain clear, concise technical communications
  • Travel internationally up to 10% for team meetings, events, and conferences

Requirements:

  • Exceptional academic track record in Computer Science, STEM, or similar
  • Experience with Linux and open-source software
  • Proficiency in at least one of Python, Go, C, or C++ on Linux
  • Strong drive to learn unfamiliar technologies and tackle difficult issues
  • Willingness to travel up to 4 times a year for internal events

  • Curiosity, flexibility, articulate communication, and accountability
  • Interest in or willingness to learn about Ubuntu Linux, Kubernetes, OpenStack, Ceph, and distributed systems
