Position

Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems, renowned for our platform, Ubuntu, which supports various enterprises in areas such as public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. We are seeking a Software Engineering Manager to lead Multipass, a workstation mini-cloud that is published for macOS, Windows, and Linux. This tool aims to provide developers with a local cloud experience, enabling them to run builds, test cloud appliances, or experiment with their own cloud deployments.

As the Software Engineering Manager at Canonical, you will have a solid technical background and be responsible for managing an effective team while fostering the growth of the engineers you oversee. Your key responsibilities will include leading a team of remote engineers, developing talent through coaching and mentoring, managing expectations across different teams, and engaging with the broader open source community.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead a team of remote engineers.
  • Develop talent through coaching, mentoring, and hands-on career development.
  • Set and manage expectations with other engineering teams and stakeholders.
  • Advocate for modern software development practices.
  • Participate in code and architectural reviews.
  • Collaborate with teams at Canonical and partners within the open source community.
  • Work remotely with travel required for 4 to 6 weeks per year for internal and external events.

Requirements:

  • A Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Computer Science, STEM, or a related field.
  • Strong track record of developing and growing team members.
  • Excellent written and verbal technical communication skills.
  • Expertise in modern C++ development.
  • Experience with cross-platform development on macOS and/or Windows.
  • Knowledge of hypervisor technologies such as Hyper-V, VirtualBox, and KVM.
  • Previous involvement in open source projects.

Work Conditions:

  • This is a remote position available in EMEA and the Americas.
  • Distributed work environment with team sprints held in person twice a year.

Language Requirements: Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
