Position

Canonical, the publisher of Ubuntu, is expanding its Linux kernel engineering capacity and is seeking multiple candidates to lead these efforts. The role involves upstream development, enhancing new kernel capabilities, collaborating with silicon and cloud partners to optimize the Ubuntu kernel, addressing CVEs, managing livepatch and security updates, and ensuring compatibility with various hardware.

The ideal candidate will either have experience managing high-performing software development teams or be a proficient technical lead ready to take on managerial responsibilities. A passion for Linux and contributing to its distribution to millions of users is essential.

Location: Jiddah, Makkah, Saudi Arabia (Remote)
Work Conditions: Full-time, Remote working environment, with travel globally 2-3 times a year for up to two weeks.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead a distributed team of engineers.
  • Develop your team through coaching, mentoring, and feedback.
  • Support on-time delivery of core and specialized Ubuntu kernels.
  • Oversee custom kernel engineering for commercial projects.
  • Maintain high standards of quality and reliability.
  • Collaborate with other teams within Canonical, the open-source community, and commercial partners.

What We Are Looking For:

  • Significant experience in programming with C, along with Python, Golang, or similar languages.
  • Solid understanding of Linux kernel internals and development principles.
  • Demonstrated experience managing or leading a software engineering team.
  • Prior contribution to an open-source project.
  • Familiarity with agile software development methodologies.
  • Proficiency in English (both written and oral).
