Position

Canonical is a leading provider of open-source software and operating systems to the global enterprise and technology markets. Our platform, Ubuntu, is widely utilized in breakthrough enterprise initiatives such as public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. As a Software Maintenance Engineer, you will work in a dynamic engineering role focusing on Linux-based infrastructure and applications, covering all layers of the stack including bare metal, virtualization (KVM), containerization (Docker/LXC/LXD), storage (Ceph and Linux filesystems), networking (OVS, OVN, and Core networking), alongside OpenStack, Kubernetes, and the open-source applications operating on top of them.

In this role, you will be tasked with resolving complex customer issues related to Ubuntu, Kernel, Ceph, OpenStack, Kubernetes, and other open-source software. You will maintain a close working relationship with Canonical's Field, Support, and product engineering teams, and participate in upstream communities. The job involves developing bug fixes, backporting patches, and collaborating with upstream teams for inclusion. Additionally, you will be responsible for troubleshooting issues, providing workarounds, and ensuring clear communication regarding technical matters. This role may require international travel up to 10% of your work time for team meetings and conferences.

Language Requirements:
Proficiency in English is expected.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Resolve complex customer problems related to Ubuntu and other open-source software.
  • Maintain close working relationships with field and product engineering teams.
  • Participate in upstream communities.
  • Develop bug fixes and collaborate with upstream teams.
  • Prioritize work and manage time effectively, participating in team discussions to improve processes and documentation.

What We Are Looking For:

  • An exceptional academic track record.
  • Background in Computer Science, STEM or a similar field.
  • Experience with Linux and open-source software.
  • Proficiency in at least one of the following programming languages: Python, Go, C, or C++ on Linux.
  • A strong desire to learn new technologies and tackle challenging issues.
  • Willingness to travel for internal events (up to 4 times a year).

  • Curiosity, flexibility, and good communication skills.
  • Interest in or willingness to learn about Ubuntu Linux, Kubernetes, OpenStack, Ceph, and other technologies.
