About the Job:

Canonical is a leading provider of open-source software and operating systems to the global enterprise and technology markets. We are looking for a Software Support Engineer to work in a dynamic and exciting engineering role focused on Linux-based infrastructure and applications. This position involves working across all layers of the stack, including bare metal, virtualization (KVM), containerization (Docker/LXC/LXD), storage (Ceph and Linux filesystems), networking (OVS, OVN, and Core networking), OpenStack, Kubernetes, and the open-source applications running on top of them.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to showcase your engineering skills while addressing critical issues that require upstream bug fixes. You will troubleshoot complex customer problems related to Ubuntu and other open-source software, maintain close relationships with Canonical's Field, Support, and product engineering teams, and actively participate in upstream communities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Resolve complex customer problems related to Ubuntu, Kernel, Ceph, OpenStack, or Kubernetes.
  • Maintain a close working relationship with Canonical's Field, Support, and product engineering teams.
  • Develop bug fixes, backport patches, and work with upstream communities for inclusion.
  • Review code produced by other engineers and demonstrate good judgment in technical methods and techniques.
  • Prioritize work and manage your time effectively against those priorities.
  • Participate in discussions to improve processes, tools, and documentation.

What We Are Looking For:

  • An exceptional academic track record, preferably in Computer Science, STEM, or similar.
  • Experience with Linux and open source software.
  • Proficiency in at least one of the following programming languages: Python, Go, C, or C++ on Linux.
  • A drive to learn unfamiliar technologies and resolve difficult issues.
  • Willingness to travel up to 4 times a year for internal events.

Nice-to-Have Skills:

  • Passion for technology and working in collaboration with talented individuals.
  • Curiosity, flexibility, articulateness, accountability, and a self-motivated attitude.
  • Interest in, or willingness to learn about, Ubuntu Linux, Kubernetes, OpenStack, Ceph, and distributed systems.

Language Requirements:

  • The job may require strong communication skills in English, although specific language requirements are not explicitly mentioned.

What We Offer:

  • Competitive compensation that considers geographical location, experience, and performance.
  • Annual compensation reviews and performance-driven bonuses.
  • Personal learning and development budget of USD 2,000 per year.
  • Annual holiday leave, maternity and paternity leave, and an Employee Assistance Programme.
  • Opportunities for international travel to meet colleagues.
