Position

Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems to the global enterprise and technology markets, known for its platform, Ubuntu. We are hiring a Software Support Engineer to work in a dynamic and exciting engineering role focused on Linux-based infrastructure and applications. This role challenges you to utilize your engineering skills across various layers of the stack, including bare metal, virtualization (KVM), containerization (Docker/LXC/LXD), storage (Ceph and Linux filesystems), networking (OVS, OVN, and Core networking), OpenStack, Kubernetes, and open source applications.

As a Software Support Engineer, you will:

  • Resolve complex customer problems related to Ubuntu, Kernel, Ceph, OpenStack, Kubernetes, and other open source software.
  • Maintain close working relationships with Canonical's Field, Support, and product engineering teams.
  • Participate in upstream communities and develop bug fixes and backport patches.
  • Review code produced by other engineers and demonstrate good judgment in technical methods and techniques.
  • Participate in team discussions to improve processes, tools, and documentation.
  • Maintain clear, technical, and concise communications.

Requirements:

  • Exceptional academic track record.
  • Background in Computer Science, STEM, or similar fields.
  • Experience with Linux and open source software.
  • Proficiency in at least one of Python, Go, C, or C++ on Linux.
  • A drive to learn unfamiliar technology and deep-dive into difficult issues.

Nice-to-Have Skills:

  • Interest in learning about Ubuntu Linux (kernel or userspace), Kubernetes, OpenStack, Ceph, QEMU/KVM, LXC/LXD, PostgreSQL, Mongo, Debian packaging, and distributed systems.
  • Strong communication and soft skills, being flexible, articulate, and accountable.
