Position

Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems to the global enterprise and technology markets. Our platform, Ubuntu, is widely used in initiatives such as public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT, with customers that include the world’s leading public cloud and silicon providers. We are hiring a Software Support Engineer to work in a dynamic and exciting engineering role focused on Linux-based infrastructure and applications across various layers of the stack, including bare metal, virtualization (KVM), containerization (Docker/LXC/LXD), storage (Ceph and Linux filesystems), networking (OVS, OVN and Core networking), OpenStack, Kubernetes, and the open source applications running on them.

In this role, you will face challenges that will require a breadth of engineering skills to work on numerous aspects of Ubuntu and the open source applications utilized by large enterprise customers. This position is ideal for technologists passionate about Linux and open source, with strong communication skills and a knack for troubleshooting complex issues.

Responsibilities:

  • Resolve complex customer problems related to Ubuntu, Kernel, Ceph, OpenStack, Kubernetes, and other open source software.
  • Maintain close working relationships with Canonical's Field, Support, and product engineering teams.
  • Participate in upstream communities and contribute to bug fixes and patches.
  • Review code produced by other engineers.
  • Exhibit good judgment in technical methods and techniques.
  • Prioritize work and manage your time effectively.
  • Contribute to team discussions aimed at improving processes, tools, and documentation.
  • Maintain clear, technical, and concise communications.
  • Work from home and travel for team meetings and conferences as required.

Qualifications:

  • Exceptional academic track record, preferably in Computer Science, STEM, or a related field.
  • Experience with Linux and open source software.
  • Proficiency in at least one of the following programming languages: Python, Go, C, or C++ on Linux.
  • Drive to learn unfamiliar technology and tackle challenging problems.
  • Willingness to travel up to 4 times a year for internal events.
