About the Job
The Senior Systems Engineer will engage in the design, lead implementation, and provide Level 3 expert support for large-scale private cloud computing infrastructure, with a focus on technologies including the hardware layer, operating system, hypervisor, and orchestration services. This role is pivotal to Core42, the UAE’s national-scale enabler for cloud and generative AI, leveraging multiple technology disciplines for public sector and large enterprise transformations.

Responsibilities

  • Co-design, implement, and manage hybrid virtualization and containerized platforms based on OpenStack, VMware VCF, and/or Red Hat OpenShift, ensuring platform stability, performance, and compliance with industry standards and best practices.
  • Collaborate with architecture and engineering teams on evaluating and selecting technology stack components, ensuring solutions are optimized from both functional and non-functional perspectives.
  • Conduct regular capacity planning exercises to accommodate the growing demands on the virtualized environment.
  • Develop and implement plans to enhance the reliability of the computing infrastructure, ensuring high availability of services.
  • Explore, analyze, and implement performance optimization strategies for the cloud computing environment.
  • Collaborate with relevant teams to conduct performance assessments and implement improvements.
  • Prepare for and participate in complex changes to production environments.
  • Develop auto-test and automation solutions for the cloud platform using tools such as Jenkins and Selenium, alongside configuration management tools like Terraform, Ansible, Puppet, Chef, and GitLab CI/CD.
  • Provide L3 expert support, including on-call shifts focusing on immediate incident management and resolution.
  • Write and maintain relevant documentation and prepare training for operational teams in related technical domains.
  • Collaborate with security management teams to ensure systems are secure against cybersecurity threats.
  • Work closely with process management and operational teams to standardize and improve collaboration efficiency.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Software Engineering, or a relevant technology field.
  • 7+ years of experience and deep expertise in designing, implementing, and managing private cloud stacks, particularly in compute and virtualization technologies.
  • Extensive hands-on experience with platforms such as OpenStack, Apache CloudStack, VMware VCF, and Red Hat OpenShift.
  • Expert-level proficiency in Linux with at least 5 years of hands-on experience in Linux-based environments.
  • Profound understanding of hardware architecture and components (x86 and ARM, NUMA, etc.).
  • Good knowledge of network and storage systems, Cloud Native concepts, and technologies.
  • Advanced programming and scripting skills in Python and/or Golang.
  • Familiarity with data center network designs and technologies (OSI model, TCP/IP stack, routing, etc.).
  • Understanding of storage architectures and protocols.
  • Familiarity with monitoring and observability tools (e.g., Zabbix, Prometheus, Grafana).
  • Knowledge of CI/CD principles, Infrastructure as Code (IaaC), and software-defined infrastructure solutions.
  • Experience with databases (SQL/NoSQL) and ITSM tools (e.g., Jira).
  • Relevant certifications in Linux, virtualization, and cloud computing are advantageous.
  • Knowledge of GPU hardware and AI hardware accelerators is a plus.
  • Strong organizational skills and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
