Responsibilities
- Maintains readiness for emergency call response; responds to fire, medical, and related emergency calls when dispatched and takes proper action.
- Educates staff and the public on fire safety and prevention; performs various Fire Department activities.
- Responds to emergency calls, assesses situations, obtains a basic medical history and physical examination of patients, and provides emergency care at the scene and during transit to the hospital.
- Uses necessary medical equipment to assess patients and ascertains the extent of their injuries or illness.
- Communicates with paramedics and the Medical Officer about patient conditions, status, and arrival times.
- Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within EMS operations.
- Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
- Performs a variety of tasks as needed.
Qualifications
- Education/Certificates:
- Two years related experience may be substituted for one year of education, if a degree is required.
- Nationally Registered as an EMT-Basic.
- Holds CPR/BLS and First Aid certifications.
- A Bachelor’s Degree or above is an attribute.
- Experience:
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in an emergency healthcare setting.
- Minimum of two years of experience working on an emergency response ambulance.
- Extensive firefighting and emergency service experience.
- Skills
- Must read, write, and speak English fluently.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Computer skills, copier/scanning experience, and the ability to learn newly admitted equipment into the EMS inventory. Preferred: seasoned instructor in the EMS career field.
- Physical Requirements:
- Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Working Environment:
- Must be able to operate various machines, tools, and equipment including a motor vehicle, computer, stretchers, litters, and medical equipment.
- Physically able to carry objects, patients, or materials; may require lifting, pulling, and dragging.
- Must be able to exert in excess of one hundred pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of fifty pounds of force frequently.
- Candidate will work shifts consisting of days, swings, and midnights.
- Minimum lifting capacity of 100lbs required.
