About the Job: This position is for first-level engineering management at Canonical, a company dedicated to making open source better for deployment and development across the tech sector. Our aim is to be the primary provider of software to most companies by harnessing the brilliance and motivation of engineers worldwide. Engineering Managers at Canonical play a critical role in helping teams achieve their full potential and ensuring they take pride in their outcomes.

We believe that Engineering Managers should be outstanding developers. They should be skilled in reviewing patches and software design specs, and their contributions to coding should be paired with the ability to guide their team's direction, focus, and delivery. The manager's role includes line management, career guidance, and fostering an environment for collaboration among teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and develop a team of engineers at various experience levels.
  • Work remotely within a primary time zone, occasionally spanning two time zones.
  • Coach, mentor, and provide career development feedback.
  • Identify and measure team health indicators.
  • Implement disciplined engineering processes.
  • Represent your team and product to stakeholders and customers.
  • Develop and promote effective engineering and organizational practices.
  • Plan and manage progress on established goals and projects.
  • Collaborate actively as part of the leadership team.

Requirements:

  • Exceptional academic track record (high school and university).
  • Undergraduate degree in Computer Science or a related STEM field, or a compelling narrative about your alternative path.
  • Proven track record of exceeding expectations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Passion for developing and growing people.
  • Experience leading, coaching, and mentoring software developers.
  • Strong organizational skills to ensure timely delivery of high-quality results.
  • Professional interaction with colleagues and partners.
  • Advanced expertise in your domain and knowledge of software development.
  • Solid experience in an agile development environment.
  • Strong motivation for continual learning.
  • Ability to build trust and relationships.
  • Results-oriented with a commitment to meeting obligations.
  • Willingness to travel twice a year for company events (up to two weeks).

Additional Skills Valued:

  • Experience in a developer advocacy or community role.
  • Ops and system administration experience.
  • Performance engineering and security experience.
