Position

The Security Engineering Manager plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and security of millions of users worldwide. By joining a team of security experts dedicated to protecting the open-source ecosystem and driving innovation, your leadership will be essential in addressing emerging threats, developing robust security measures, and maintaining the integrity of Ubuntu.

The responsibilities of the security engineering team include responding to emerging threats and securing the open-source ecosystem for community and enterprise use. You will work to improve security for millions by addressing potential CVEs and vulnerabilities within Canonical products such as Ubuntu. This role involves engaging with our community and customers as well as coordinating efforts across various engineering teams and projects.

What You Will Do:

  • Lead and develop a team of engineers, ranging from graduate to senior level.
  • Provide technical guidance on vulnerability remediation.
  • Drive the development of new security engineering projects.
  • Collaborate with upstream open source projects on vulnerability lifecycle management.
  • Coach, mentor, and offer career development feedback.
  • Identify and measure team health indicators.
  • Implement disciplined engineering processes.
  • Represent your team and product to stakeholders, partners, and customers.
  • Develop and promote effective engineering and organizational practices.
  • Plan and manage progress on agreed goals and projects.
  • Actively participate in the security engineering leadership team, collaborating with other leaders.

What We Are Looking For:

  • Exceptional academic track record from high school and university, or a compelling narrative about an alternative path.
  • Undergraduate degree in Computer Science or a related STEM field.
  • Proven track record of exceeding expectations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Passion for developing and growing people, along with a history of doing so.
  • Strong organizational skills to ensure timely, high-quality results.
  • Professional demeanor with colleagues, partners, and the community.
  • Solid background in software development, including expertise in support and maintenance.
  • Mastery in any programming language (Go, Java, C, Python, etc.).
  • Knowledgeable and passionate about software and application security.
  • Solid experience in an agile development environment.
  • A demonstrated commitment to continual learning.
  • Ability to build trust, relationships, and confidence.

Optional Qualifications:

  • Strong technical understanding of the inner workings of Linux distributions (ideally Ubuntu or Debian).
