About the Job: Canonical is a leading provider of open-source software and operating systems, best known for our Ubuntu platform. We support various enterprise initiatives including public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. With over 1100 colleagues in more than 75 countries, our teams meet in person two to four times a year in various global locations to align on strategy and execution.

We are seeking a Web Engineering Manager to collaborate with various teams and roles to deliver reliable, scalable, and delightful user experiences for Canonical products. The primary responsibility of this role involves supporting and guiding the growth of web engineers, ensuring they are engaged in valuable work and have a great experience at Canonical. A strong background in web development and technical leadership is essential to challenge and develop team members.

Work Conditions: Full-time, remote position with the requirement to travel twice a year for company events for up to two weeks each.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate sound engineering principles contributing to team goals.
  • Estimate work, set goals, and meet them.
  • Design and implement well-tested and documented software using Web technologies or Flutter.
  • Debug and fix issues encountered by users.
  • Participate in code and architectural reviews.
  • Collaborate on technical specifications with community and colleagues.
  • Contribute to technical documentation and seek improvements in practices.
  • Deploy and operate services developed by the team.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledgeable and passionate about web and software development.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, curiosity, flexibility, and accountability.
  • Professional written and spoken English.
  • Experience with high-quality web technologies, particularly Typescript, React, or Flutter.
  • Familiarity with Linux (Debian or Ubuntu preferred).
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills.
  • Undergraduate degree in Computer Science or a related STEM field.

Nice-to-Have Skills:

  • Experience with container technology (LXD, Docker, Kubernetes).
  • REST API design, development, and governance.
  • Performance engineering and security experience.
