Position

Canonical is a leading provider of open-source software and operating systems for global enterprise and technology markets. Our platform, Ubuntu, is widely used in breakthrough enterprise initiatives such as public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. We are hiring a Lead Data Governance Engineer focused on data governance policies, processes, standards, and monitoring to ensure compliance with internal policies and applicable regulatory frameworks (e.g., GDPR, DPA, ISO).

The successful candidate will develop Python-based tooling to automate operations related to internal data mesh solutions, such as data labeling and quality metrics, while adhering to best practices in data access management and data security. The Data Governance team in the Commercial Systems unit aims to enable secure and well-governed access to comprehensive data sets originating from a variety of internal and external sources.

Work Conditions:

  • Type: Full-time, Remote
  • Team Meetings: Teams meet two to four times yearly in person in interesting locations around the world.
  • Travel Requirement: Ability to travel internationally twice a year for company events lasting up to two weeks.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Define, monitor, and execute data governance policies.
  • Design, implement, and maintain tooling for automated data mesh operations.
  • Deploy and operate services developed by the team.
  • Depending on seniority, mentor and provide career development feedback.
  • Develop and promote effective engineering and organizational practices.

Requirements:

  • Exceptional academic track record from high school and university or compelling alternative path.
  • Undergraduate degree in a technical subject.
  • Experience with data quality, governance, and security processes and tools.
  • Proficiency in software development using Python and SQL.
  • Professional written and spoken English with excellent presentation skills.
  • Result-oriented with a personal drive to meet commitments.
  • International travel capability as specified.

Nice-to-Have Skills:

  • Performance engineering and security experience.
  • Experience with tools such as Airbyte, Ranger, Superset, Temporal, or Trino.
