Our platform, Ubuntu, is widely used in groundbreaking enterprise initiatives such as public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. Our customers include the world’s leading public cloud and silicon providers as well as industry leaders across various sectors. As a pioneer of globally distributed collaboration, we have over 1100 colleagues in more than 75 countries, with very few office-based roles. Teams meet in person two to four times yearly in interesting locations worldwide to align on strategy and execution. Canonical is founder-led, profitable, and growing.

We are hiring a Web Engineering Manager who will work collaboratively with many teams and roles across the organization, including product managers and other engineering teams, to deliver reliable, scalable, and delightful user experiences for Canonical products. As an Engineering Manager at Canonical, your primary responsibility is to the people you support: ensuring they grow as web engineers, do valuable work, and generally have a great time at Canonical. You will need technical leadership experience and a solid background in web development to challenge and grow your team members effectively. You will have the opportunity to influence the culture, facilitate technical delivery, and work with your team on strategy and execution.

Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate sound engineering principles by contributing directly to the team’s goals.
  • Estimate work, set goals, and meet them.
  • Design and implement well-tested and documented software in Web technologies or Flutter.
  • Debug and fix issues encountered by users.
  • Participate in engineering processes through code and architectural reviews.
  • Collaborate with the community and colleagues on technical specifications.
  • Contribute to technical documentation.
  • Seek improvements to engineering and operations practices.
  • Deploy and operate services developed by the team.
  • Contribute to the success of your product through technical advocacy.

Language Requirements:

  • Professional written and spoken English is essential.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledgeable and passionate about web and software development.
  • Strong soft skills; enterprising, thoughtful, and self-motivated.
  • Exceptional academic track record from both high school and university.
  • Undergraduate degree in Computer Science or STEM, or a compelling narrative about your alternative path.
  • Experience designing and writing high-quality web technologies.
  • Passion for front-end technologies such as Typescript, React, or Flutter.
  • An eye for accessibility and performance.
  • Experience with Linux (Debian or Ubuntu preferred).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, curiosity, flexibility, and accountability.
  • Result-oriented with a personal drive to meet commitments.
  • Ability to travel twice a year for company events for up to two weeks each.

Nice-to-Have Skills:

  • Experience with container tech such as LXD, Docker, and Kubernetes.
  • Experience in REST API design, development, and governance.
  • Performance engineering and security experience.

What We Offer:

  • Competitive compensation with annual reviews.
  • Performance-driven annual bonus or commission.
  • Additional benefits reflecting our values and ideals.
  • Distributed work environment with twice-yearly team sprints in person.
  • Personal learning and development budget of USD 2,000 per year.
  • Recognition rewards, annual holiday leave, maternity and paternity leave.
  • Employee Assistance Programme and opportunities to travel for team events.
