Position

Canonical is a leading provider of open-source software and operating systems, particularly recognized for its platform, Ubuntu, which is extensively used in enterprise initiatives such as public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. Canonical operates with a focus on global distributed collaboration, employing over 1200 colleagues across more than 80 countries, with minimal office-based roles. Teams meet in person two to four times yearly in varied global locations for strategic alignment.

We are seeking a Lead Data Governance Engineer to specialize in data governance policies, processes, standards, and monitoring in compliance with internal policies and applicable regulatory frameworks (e.g., GDPR, DPA, ISO). The successful candidate will be responsible for developing Python-based tools to automate operations of an internal data mesh solution, including data labeling and quality metrics, while executing data, access management, and data security best practices.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Define, monitor, and execute data governance policies.
  • Design, implement, and maintain tooling for automated data mesh operations.
  • Deploy and operate services developed by the team.
  • Mentor and provide career development feedback, depending on seniority.
  • Advocate for effective engineering and organizational practices.

Requirements:

  • Exceptional academic track record from high school and university (undergraduate degree in a technical subject preferred).
  • Proven track record of exceeding expectations to achieve outstanding results.
  • Experience with data quality, governance, and security processes and tools.
  • Proficiency in Python and SQL for software development.
  • Professional written and spoken English with excellent presentation skills.
  • Result-oriented with a strong personal drive to meet commitments.

Nice-to-Have Skills:

  • Experience in performance engineering and security.
  • Familiarity with tools such as Airbyte, Ranger, Superset, Temporal, or Trino.

Language Requirements:

  • Professional written and spoken English is required.

Location: Riyadh, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (Remote).

Work Conditions: Full-time, Remote position with the requirement to travel internationally twice a year for company events lasting up to two weeks.
