Position

Canonical is a leading provider of open-source software and operating systems, particularly through its platform, Ubuntu. This position is part of a large and rapidly growing kernel team responsible for the Ubuntu Linux kernels across various platforms and architectures, from embedded devices to cloud environments. The team focuses on ensuring production readiness, performance, security, reliability, and hardware enablement.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with a globally distributed team and external partners, including silicon and hardware manufacturers.
  • Diagnose and resolve kernel issues reported by customers and the community.
  • Take responsibility for delivering a variant of the Ubuntu Linux kernel.
  • Improve tooling and automation for kernel delivery and testing.
  • Submit, review, and apply kernel patches in collaboration with upstream maintainers.

Candidate Requirements:

  • Significant programming experience in C; familiarity with Python, Golang, or similar languages is advantageous.
  • Experience with operating system kernel internals; Linux knowledge is valued.
  • Solid understanding of git and software packaging formats, especially Ubuntu/Debian/Snap.
  • Knowledge of Linux kernel upstream processes and release cycles.
  • Professional proficiency in written and spoken English, with strong presentation skills.
  • Willingness to travel globally twice a year for team events (up to two weeks each).

Nice-to-Have Skills:

  • Understanding of device drivers and low-level system engineering.
  • Experience in performance engineering and security.
  • Background in CI/CD processes and open-source project contributions.
