About the Job: This role is part of Canonical's engineering teams focusing on low-level system technology and embedded systems. We seek careful and conscientious engineers who can tackle challenges related to memory, performance, battery life, and connectivity constraints in code that must operate reliably in unpredictable environments on x86, ARM, or RISC-V architectures. Canonical Ubuntu is a leading platform for software engineering, cloud, and IoT, offering a high-performance, secure environment. Our work with major silicon companies and device manufacturers ensures that Ubuntu operates seamlessly across various hardware. Our teams are dedicated to enhancing open-source solutions for embedded environments.
What Your Day Will Look Like: - Collaborate with globally distributed teams on software development - Deliver Ubuntu for the latest IoT and server-class hardware platforms - Write high-quality, well-designed software and maintain device-oriented software stacks - Participate in technical discussions and contribute to documentation - Engage with the open-source community and support customers in deploying apps and SDKs on Ubuntu - Work mainly from home with occasional global travel (2-4 weeks per year for company events)
What We Are Looking For: - Exceptional academic record in Computer Science or a related STEM field - Experience with Linux (Debian or Ubuntu preferred) - Proficiency in at least one programming language: Golang, C, C++, or Rust - Strong written and spoken English communication skills - Ability to travel up to twice a year for company events
Additional Skills That You Might Bring: - Familiarity with Debian/Ubuntu packaging and build systems - Experience in firmware, power management, or computer architecture (x86, ARM, RISC-V) - Knowledge of electrical engineering design tools - Skills in shell or Python scripting
