Position

We are looking for an Observability Engineering Manager to lead the development of distributed tracing and service mesh products within our Observability group. As an Engineering Manager, you will not only manage but also actively participate in coding, reviewing, and guiding both architecture and code. The ideal candidate should be skilled in team leadership, focused on objectives, and capable of cultivating a positive, productive environment.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Managing a distributed team of engineers and overseeing the observability portfolio.
  • Organizing team processes to achieve objectives.
  • Conducting one-on-one meetings with team members.
  • Measuring and improving team health indicators.
  • Reviewing code and planning technical deliverables.
  • Attending conferences to represent Canonical and its Observability Stack.

What We Are Looking For:

  • Exceptional academic track record.
  • Proven experience in software delivery, preferably in open-source environments.
  • Willingness to travel up to four times a year for internal events.
  • Fluent in professional written and spoken English.
  • Experience with Linux (Debian or Ubuntu preferred).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, curiosity, flexibility, and accountability.
  • Strong communication and presentation abilities.
  • Result-oriented with a personal drive to meet commitments.

Nice-to-Have Skills:

  • Experience as an engineering manager with a proven record of building high-performance teams.
  • Professional experience in Python and familiarity with Go.
  • Contributions to open-source projects.
  • Understanding of observability and monitoring.
