Position

Canonical is a leading provider of open-source software and operating systems, notably the Ubuntu platform, utilized in various enterprise initiatives, including public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. We are seeking an Observability Engineering Manager to lead the development of our distributed tracing or service mesh products within the Observability group.

This full-time remote position, based in Dubai, UAE, will require travel up to four times a year for internal events. The role requires a technically strong individual who is also an effective team leader. You will manage a distributed team of engineers focused on creating an observability stack that is easy to deploy and operate on Kubernetes. This initiative aims to deliver the best suite of open-source tools for metrics, logging, telemetry, alerting, tracing, and profiling, making these tools integral to software practices.

As an Engineering Manager, your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Managing a distributed team and its observability portfolio
  • Organizing and leading team processes to achieve objectives
  • Conducting one-on-one meetings with team members
  • Identifying and measuring team health indicators
  • Reviewing code and attending conferences to represent Canonical

Language Requirements:
Professional written and spoken English is required.

Qualifications:

  • Exceptional academic track record from both high school and university
  • Proven professional experience in software delivery, preferably in the open-source domain
  • Professional development experience with Linux (Debian or Ubuntu preferred)
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills
  • Passion for, and self-motivation in technology

Nice-to-Have Skills:

  • Experience as an engineering manager with a track record of building high-performance teams
  • Professional development experience in Python and a working knowledge of Go
  • Open-source contribution experience
  • Understanding of observability and monitoring importance
