About the Job: Canonical is hiring a Python Software Engineer to join the Certification team, responsible for developing tools that ensure desktops, laptops, servers, and IoT devices operate properly. This role sits at the intersection of hardware and software, making it ideal for a Python developer familiar with hardware. The Certification team's tools are essential for certifying hardware compatibility with Ubuntu Core, Ubuntu Desktop, and Ubuntu Server. The successful candidate will have a meaningful impact on the adoption of Linux across various device categories and industries. Canonical provides a dynamic team environment with opportunities for continuous learning and professional development. This team primarily operates in EMEA time zones and collaborates with colleagues in the Americas and APAC. Role Description: We are seeking a self-motivated software engineer experienced in Python development, particularly in test automation tools or Linux-based embedded hardware. This position presents an exciting chance to advance the industry by introducing new Linux-based hardware testing capabilities and scaling certification efforts for deeper test coverage. Key Responsibilities: - Maintain and develop features for Python-based test automation tools like Checkbox, utilized by in-house teams and industry partners. - Innovate methods for remote, automated testing. - Build software solutions corresponding to in-house designed testing hardware to facilitate device enablement (graphics, hotplug, Bluetooth, etc.). - Write functional and performance tests to support hardware enablement and prevent regressions. - Participate in meetings and travel internationally 2-3 times per year. Required Skills and Experience: - Proficiency in Python programming language. - Quality-oriented and pragmatic approach to software design and implementation. - Interest in test automation methodologies. - Previous experience with Ubuntu or other Linux distributions. - Ability to thrive in a globally distributed team. Desired Skills and Experience: - Passion for tinkering and a maker mentality. - Experience working in an agile environment. - Hardware testing experience, particularly in the IoT space. - Familiarity with the C programming language.
