Position

We are seeking an experienced software engineer passionate about Linux systems, hardware architectures, Ubuntu, and the open-source community to join the Ubuntu Foundations Engineering team. The role involves maintaining and enhancing the Ubuntu bootloader stack to ensure fast, reliable, and secure Ubuntu systems across all devices and in the cloud.

The boot process is critical in any operating system, requiring stability, reliability, and security. The efficiency and quality of this process contribute to Ubuntu's success across Desktop, Server, and Cloud environments. The Foundations team focuses on these essential functions and is looking for individuals passionate about lower-level technologies, from hardware to firmware and Linux itself.

Applicants should be comfortable with Secure Boot, Measured Boot, Full Disk Encryption, and other technologies involved in modern operating systems' boot processes. This highly technical role is key to system security and reliability.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate proactively with a distributed team.
  • Define and shape the boot architecture of Ubuntu with a highly technical team.
  • Engage in projects focusing on Ubuntu for server, desktop, IoT, and cloud.
  • Write high-quality code for new features and contribute upstream.
  • Debug issues and produce high-quality fixes.
  • Review code produced by other engineers and mentor less experienced team members.
  • Discuss ideas and collaborate to find effective solutions.

Valued Skills, Approach, and Experience:

  • Development experience with early boot software like TF-A, OP-TEE, U-Boot, shim, GRUB, or the Linux kernel.
  • Experience on non-x86 platforms such as ARM, RISC-V.
  • A love for technology and the ability to work with brilliant people.
  • Motivated, curious, flexible, articulate, and accountable.
  • A long-time Linux user with broad interests in the future of Linux.
  • Experience or interest in learning how to package software for Debian and Ubuntu.
  • Bachelor's or equivalent in Computer Science, STEM, or similar degree.
  • Enterprising, thoughtful, and self-motivated.
