Canonical boasts a diverse team of over 1,100 colleagues across 75+ countries, with very few office-based roles. Teams meet in person two to four times yearly to align on strategy and execution.

We are hiring a Senior Engineering Manager to lead the engineering team responsible for key components of Ubuntu, including system startup, compilers, language runtimes, toolchains, and networking and storage management. Ideal candidates will have a thorough understanding of Linux and Ubuntu, coupled with a passion for exceptional leadership. Responsibilities include demonstrating sound engineering principles, planning and executing projects, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and fostering a healthy engineering culture.

What We Are Looking For:

  • Extensive experience with Linux distributions and packaging technologies (e.g., deb, rpm)
  • Proven experience managing or leading a team of software engineers
  • High-quality software engineering skills, particularly in Linux system architecture, boot processes, and various programming toolchains (Java, GCC, Python, Rust, Go)
  • Engagement with open source communities and processes

What We Offer Colleagues:

  • Compensation reflective of geographical location, experience, and performance, with annual reviews
  • Performance-driven annual bonus or commission
  • Personal learning and development budget of USD 2,000 per year
  • Additional benefits, including annual holiday leave, maternity and paternity leave, and an Employee Assistance Programme
  • Opportunities for travel to meet colleagues at global locations

Language Requirements: None specified.
