Position

Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems, best known for Ubuntu, which plays a critical role in public cloud, data science, AI, and IoT sectors. As a pioneer of global distributed collaboration, the company comprises over 1,100 colleagues located in more than 75 countries.

We are hiring a Senior Engineering Manager to lead a team responsible for the essential components of Ubuntu, including system startup, compilers, language runtimes and toolchains, as well as networking and storage configuration and management. This vibrant and highly technical role is situated at the core of Linux server systems.

In this pivotal position, you'll lead and inspire your engineering team, working at the intersection of the open-source ecosystem and enterprise technologies. We seek a candidate with a profound understanding of Linux and Ubuntu, paired with exceptional leadership skills.

Location: Jiddah, Makkah, Saudi Arabia (Remote)
Work Conditions: Full-time, remote with in-person meetings twice a year (sprints typically last 1-2 weeks)

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and grow a distributed team of engineers.
  • Demonstrate sound engineering principles through active and hands-on leadership.
  • Manage planning, estimation, and execution of projects.
  • Collaborate with product management to define the vision and strategy for Ubuntu.
  • Engage with leadership across teams to align on product architecture and roadmaps.
  • Advocate for and implement the latest software development practices.

Requirements:

  • Extensive experience with Linux distributions and packaging technologies (e.g., deb, rpm).
  • Proven leadership experience managing software engineering teams.
  • High-quality software engineering knowledge in Linux system architecture, boot processes, and various programming toolchains (Java, GCC, Python, Rust, Go).
  • Engagement with open-source communities and processes.
